{"id":167,"date":"2021-07-01T14:40:41","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T13:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/surreycirclehealth.co.uk\/?p=167"},"modified":"2021-07-01T14:40:41","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T13:40:41","slug":"health-news-august-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.surreycirclehealth.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/07\/01\/health-news-august-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Health News &#8211; August 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear SCH Health News Reader, trusting that you and your family are continuing to stay safe and well as this country\u2019s ethos now being to take \u201cpersonal responsibility\u201d to maintain safety \u2013 Further to which a rather stark warning is reported upon by the New York Times International edition of 23<sup>rd<\/sup> July, with the article \u2018Nations New Virus Plan: Learn to Live with it\u2019, quoting Michael Baker, an epidemiologist from the university of Otago in New Zealand, \u201ccountries taking shortcuts on their way to reopening were putting unvaccinated people at risk and gambling with lives.\u201d Sobering headlines indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing with the theme that I\u2019ve focused upon in recent months, healthcare industry magazine \u2018Cover\u2019 of 20<sup>th<\/sup> July had an interesting article entitled \u2018How Can Companies Support Employees with Long Covid?\u2019 \u2013 \u201cThere is growing concern about the impact of Long COVID on people that have had Coronavirus, and it is something that employers may need to factor into their health and wellbeing strategies as people return to the workplace after the lifting of restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general medical journal \u2018The Lancet\u2019s sub-journal EClinicalMedicine\u2019 published a study in the past month across 56 countries identifying more than 200 different Long COVID symptoms including fatigue and post exertional malaise, where people\u2019s health worsens after physical or mental exertion. Upon reflection, this healthcare professional finds it quite worrying that this \u201cexertional malaise\u201d is no doubt further fuelling the obesity epidemic that was already spiralling out of control in the western world during this 21<sup>st<\/sup> century\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going back to the The New York Times International edition of 23<sup>rd<\/sup> July, having picked up a copy at the airport with forced overseas travel in order to visit a very sick relative, some further interesting health related snippets include \u2013 \u201cOnly 1 percent of peoples in low income countries have vaccine doses\u201d, according to the \u2018Our World in Data Project.\u2019 With the article \u2018Virus Widens the Racial Gap in Longevity\u2019 it states \u201cUS life expectancy has reduced by the steepest decline since World War Two, with Hispanic Americans experiencing the greatest drop of 3 years, with black Americans closely following at 2.9, and whites at 1.2 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Cover\u2019 magazine\u2019s 28<sup>th<\/sup> July copy flags up that during the past 6 months 13.2 million in the UK (38% of the adult population) have avoided routine check-ups due to persisting concerns over the NHS\u2019s ability to meet non-Covid related needs, including mammograms, cervical smear tests and blood tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a more positive note to sign off for this mid-summer month, in preparation for \u2018Freedom Day\u2019 (19<sup>th<\/sup> July) \u2018Cover\u2019 of 8<sup>th<\/sup> July listed some key pointers in their article entitled \u2013 \u2018How to Ensure a Successful Return to the Office on Freedom Day\u2019;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Communicating Plans \u2013 including a re-orientation plan<\/li><li>Listening to staff feedback and concerns<\/li><li>Clearly sign-post support, with Long COVID experiencing employees or ones experiencing bereavement<\/li><li>Focus upon health and wellbeing \u2013 Regular meetings, being alert to mental health issues<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For the sports fans amongst us, of which I firmly count myself as one, we\u2019re being spoilt for choice this summer hey \u2013 including the Euros football (oh so nearly actually \u2018coming home\u2019!!), Parisian &amp; Wimbledon tennis, currently the Olympics from Japan, cricket and rugby, as well as pre-season warm-up games currently being played in preparation for the start of the new 21\/22 Premier League football season, starting in just two weekend\u2019s time! Enjoy the feast of sports, whether you decide to view in person or continue to do so remotely.
